Spanish in the fifth most spoken language in the world; think of all the people with whom you can communicate! This course expands student’s knowledge of the Utah World Language Standards. Students will practice the previous knowledge gained in Spanish III. They also will expand their vocabulary on many topics as well as review grammatical concepts and verb tenses. Course Objective: To help students gain a first year level understanding and ability to communicate in the Spanish language. The most effective way to learn Spanish is to hear and speak it; therefore, the class will be conducted principally in Spanish. The course is based on the Utah World Languages Core Curriculum, which outlines specific standards for student learning. The Core curriculum includes ideas, concepts, and skills, which provide a foundation on which subsequent learning may be built. The Core Standards for Proficiency can be accessed on the Utah State Office of Education’s website at: www.uen.org/core Materials: Notebook, Spanish-English dictionary, pencil and/or pen and a good attitude. Academic Grades: Language is graded by how it is used. Your grade will be based on your use of Spanish through assignments, quizzes, tests, oral work, class participation and projects. Grades are based on the standard Granite School District grading scale. We will be using Proficiency Based Learning (PBL) as our grading system. Grades are posted on Gradebook. Gradebook is accessed through the Granite School District website. Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. Students will expand their vocabulary on many topics as well as review and finetune grammatical concepts and verb tenses that Citizenship Grades: The citizenship grade is as important as the academic grade. Your behavior in class along with your participation will determine your citizenship grade. A low citizenship grade will inevitably affect your academic grade. All students have the right to learn in a safe environment. I, as your teacher, have the right to teach without interruption. You are expected to adhere to the following guidelines while in my class. Talking out – There will be no talking while the teacher or another student is taking or when expected to be quiet and listening. Inappropriate Language or Gestures – No swearing or use of other offensive words or gestures will be tolerated. You know what is appropriate. Off Task – You are expected to participate in class activities. Out of Seat – Be in your seat before the tardy bell rings; begin the “apertura” exercise. Stay in your seat unless given permission to move. The bell doesn't dismiss the class, I do. Keep Student Area Clean – Keep areas clean; don’t write on your desk. Unsafe Conduct – BE SAFE, BE SMART, ACT YOUR AGE. Students will earn a 1 in citizenship if behavior or language is inappropriate when a substitute is in the class, no questions asked.Assessments: Students may make up a missed exam or make arrangements to do so within a week of the original assessment date. Being absent the class period prior to the assessment is not an excuse for not doing the assessment on the scheduled day, as assessments are announced in advance. Several quizzes will be given throughout the term; some will definitely be pop quizzes, in that case there is no make-up. Assessments CAN NOT be redone unless ALL the activities designed to prepare you are completed. Homework and Assignments: Assignments are to be turned in on time. “On Time” means the beginning of class the day it is due. Work turned in late will receive a deduction in points. No work from the beginning of the term will be accepted after midterm. Check your CANVAS periodically to know what assignments are missing. Projects: There will be at least one project per term, including two “Contactos Culturales”. These are designed to get students involved in the application of the Latin culture that surrounds them. Classroom Rules: 1 – EVERYONE in the class DESERVES to be treated with RESPECT. 2 – Humiliations or deliberately hurtful comments will not be tolerated. 3 – No one is allowed to interrupt the process of learning. 4 – Use your common sense. Attendance: It is the policy of Granger HS to promote regular attendance. All students are expected to be in class on time every school day, in every class. Absences and tardies cause students to lose significant instruction and learning that cannot be easily duplicated outside of the class time. Your citizenship grade is derived from the following: 1 tardy or absence = 4 in citizenship 2 tardies and/or 2 absences = 3 in citizenship 3 tardies and or absences = 2 in citizenship 4 tardies and or absences = 1 in citizenship 5 tardies and or absences = 0 in citizenship. **** District policy states that one unexcused absence results in a 1 in citizenship and two unexcused absences will result in a 0 in citizenship**** regardless of the number of tardies. Tardy – Entering the room after the tardy bell has rung. Tardies cannot be made up. Absences - All absences must be excused through the attendance office.
